The brave

In today’s world, nobody bats an eye when a male talks about adventuring/traveling alone, because we have set this as a norm, “males can do whatever they want” type of thing. However, in my mind and this is supported by real statistics, males are as much in danger adventuring/traveling alone as are women. When I moved to Washington state, the most attractive thing to me was the endless beauty in the wilderness. God truly did love this side of the world….I quickly became addicted to being outdoors, and I enjoyed hiking immensely. It is my way of distressing and recharging after stressful work weeks or school days. A few times I do hike with other people, but I love going solo because of the freedom to hike more difficult trails and just take it all in without being bothered. I never for one second felt threatened by anything/anyone on the trails, I meet a lot of fellow young lady hikers on the trails, hiking solo too and this encourages me even more.

Tips on hiking/camping/traveling/adventuring solo:

1. Know your environment well. This means doing a lot of research on the conditions of the place you are visiting, and also reading reviews about people’s experiences there. I feel very safe on Washington trails because the areas are overall very safe and far from urban places, meaning less chances for crimes. You are more likely to be in danger in a city full of people than in a Washington state trail in my opinion. I do not hike urban parks because homeless people go there for shelter, I prefer out and back trails that require driving far away from the city to get to.

2. Plan accordingly. Safety first. Have a first aid kit customized for yourself (if you have allergies, bring allergy medicine. Have pain medicine, antiseptic, bandages, small rope/tourniquet for emergency purposes, pepper spray or bear spray if in bear country, pocket knife – could be used for so many things including protecting yourself and a whistle too). Have extra food, extra clothing and most important dress for the weather.

3. Last tip, let someone know where you are. I always send a quick text to someone about where I am going to be and the time I expect to be back. If they don’t hear back from me at that time, then they would act accordingly.

I hope this makes you feel more at ease about going solo in whichever place you choose to. Just do your research well and be prepared. I met someone who loves camping solo and she always has a gun with her for safety, if you love adventure, don’t let anything stop you. Just be smart about things.

If you hate being alone and don’t care for solo adventuring, then find someone like minded and in somewhat same physical fitness(I don’t mean this in a bad way at all, if your partner can’t do what you can, then you don’t get to do what you want. Some people are also endless complainers and won’t stop whining – I have seen this a lot while hiking and it is so annoying) Any how, I hope this was somewhat of an encouragement to those seeking adventure, have fun and thanks for stopping by.

Catching up

Hi there lovely ladies and gentlemen
My days have been rather monotonous consisting of large piles of school work and long days at work, leaving me wishing it was summer again, where I had so much time in my hands. Can you believe class got cancelled because of wind?, yes you read that right, apparently that is a very unsafe condition that demands cancellation of classes(am sure in certain areas of the world, strong winds are extremely dangerous, but yeah..no it wasn’t that bad) of course I was happy I didn’t have class but seriously?, I don’t see it as a good enough reason to cancel class, because that just means more work for me (online assignments) when I could have just sat in class pretending to listen to lecture. I hope my instructor doesn’t read my blog haha, she is a lovely woman but sometimes I think she enjoys leaving class early more than the students do.

Do you like my outfit?, I have never owned a wide brim wool hat, so I branched out style wise and I love it, more because I didn’t have to do my hair, even though it almost got blown off by the wind while I was out haha
I was thinking the other day how calculated I am about style branching, I spend a lot of months contemplating before i do something dramatic like owning a hat haha, I wanted this hat since January, and now is when I finally got it. I am definitely not an impulse shopper, I think of how and when I will wear whatever I got (unless I am gifted something). I know I don’t sound fun to go shopping with, but i promise I will try on everything in the store, I just end up leaving empty handed in most cases. You may not know this from looking at my blog posts but thats me in real life haha. I actually never used to be this way, I was a shopaholic when in high school thanks to my mom who lead the example haha, but when I started living solo, I just didn’t see the need to clutter my apartment with clothes, I hate having tons of clothes everywhere (biggest pet peeve)

Minimalist outfit of the day

Hello friends,

Today am sharing my favorite kind of post…outfits!, I have been wearing very minimal outfits because its summer and super hot, and today I got excited when I wore this dress that I haven’t worn since winter because it was too tight, but voila…haha

This summer I have fallen in love with the minimalist look..less is more type of deal, or rather am forced to wear less unless I want to literally fry my body parts

Am also enjoying wearing out my hair since it has grown from the teenie weenie afro that it was last year. Are you guys enjoying your summer so far or winter/cold months, for those on the other side of the world? As you can tell I am soaking up all the sun and packing on the vitamin D before the sun disappears.

Shyness

DSC_0407_Fotor
When I wrote my first monologue of a post at 18 years old, I never thought at 25 years old I would ever talk about shyness..seriously, it would have seemed like a retrogression of some sort, but I have realized, the older we get, the more self-aware and wiser we become, and I have truly grown from that 18 year old girl I used to be.
Are you one of those people who are just going about life and people around you start asking things like, “why are so quiet?, do you want to say something?” etc etc, if yes then stick around..
Growing up, I never would have categorized myself as a shy person/quiet, I always had a group of friends that I talked to, but people especially grown ups (teachers and family friends)would always tell my parents I was quiet or shy, and they gave it a negative connotation, making it seem like it was a bad thing..which made me want to get far away as possible from that label.
In college, shyness/being quiet became even more of a thing because I was in a different country going through a very different social adjustment, with college students who constantly pointed out my differences and socializing just became exhausting to me unless it was with Kenyan people (who obviously I clicked well with).
Out of the school environment, I still get the “quiet girl” label with my interactions with others, and at first I just wondered…is it such a bad thing to be quiet?, I know at times it may make situations a bit awkward with new people, and its required sometimes to feign interest in someone so as to diffuse this awkwardness. It also may make you seem uninterested in others around you, and sometimes you may be….but it paints as rude (in places like a friends house, a dinner or a party etc)
Most times, as a quiet person people may tend to take advantage of you, and thats where you have to clearly set boundaries and say “no am not happy with that and stand your ground”
It is ok to be naturally quiet, there’s nothing wrong with it. Find people who you click well with and be good friends with them, in social situations, fake it! haha it may become exhausting but if its unavoidable, you’ve got to.
Quiet people are also underestimated a lot, and are some of the smartest people I know. For expats living away from home and away from your comfort zone, different social environment with unfamiliar social behaviors may make you a shy/quiet person because you are afraid of embarrassing yourself due to lack of knowledge in certain things that are familiar to others around you, and also people may approach you less or even ignore/lack to acknowledge what you have to say just because you are so different. However, over time, we adjust and are able to socialize easily.
Lastly, if you are this type of person, don’t be intimidated by the crowd..i mean, whats the worst that could happen? (unless your life is on the line haha), keep on living your life and know that there are very many people out there who feel the same way you do…and we are all just people!

If you prefer seeing me talk about the topic, click on the video below…warning: I have a cold and may have blood shot eyes and a strange voice haha, please bear with me, I really wanted to talk about this. I would appreciate your feedback too 🙂

It’s been a busy week and my little worry-filled head needed a break today. It was a day full of coincidences..
first we went to brunch at Smoke and Cedar , which is on a golf course and right in front of me on the putty green was my old communications class teacher practicing his “swings”. I didn’t say hi if you’re wondering, because I would’ve had to duck flying golf balls to get to him and I figure teachers go through so many students to remember each one and he would be forced to pretend he remembered me.
Later on, we went to see the movie ex-machina (pretty good), then we came across this car parked right in front of this historic barn at the park, what a great coincidence!, I initially thought it was a prop for some photographer of sorts, but nobody was there and of course I had to pull out my camera haha.. I think the owner just wanted to show off this coolness and I responded very well to this.
Ian decided to let me know that I wasn’t allowed to jump in or lean on the car….duh.. haha
Nevertheless, it was fun taking outfit pics today

This is what I wore yesterday, I love these shorts, the cute pattern reminds me of a green blouse my mom owned in the 90s and a yellow scarf my grandma wore all the time haha..definitely a staple in my closet now. The weather was cooler in the morning and I thought…oh no, i def look stupid with shorts in this weather, but then suddenly it became warmer than I even thought it was going to get, so I fit right in.
I hope you guys are having a lovely week so far 🙂

I have to admit..yellow is one of my least favorite colors, next to orange. I own very few yellow clothes and most of them are work out clothes. I am still warming up to this top I got from Ian’s mom, it has potential 🙂
The ruffles are interesting, never something I would pick out in a store…I felt like i was wearing a bird on my chest haha, anyhow, it was fun wearing this out today, my shorts went well with the top, making the outfit look well put together. Am also so very proud for my braids lasting this long, its been a month already and they are hanging in there.

Can you guys believe it’s the end of the week already, and the beginning of a new week for others? Man! time is going to fast. I hope you guys had a great week, I was really good about working out all of last week, and I hope things stay that way.
Today am wearing one of this winter’s favorite of mine. I’ve worn it so much just because it’s an easy and comfortable outfit (mostly without the belt). I love peter-pan collars, so cute and in cold weather there’s no need for scarfs.

On other news, I have done 2 hikes up the mountains in one week! Can life get any better than this haha. I literally want to hike all over Washington, there is so much natural beauty to be explored, and there’s nothing better than being out in the mountains after a long work week, even though one of my patient thinks I torture myself doing this, he asked me yesterday if my back was hurting from all the hiking haha

Patels and solids

DSC_0067_Fotor

Hi friends, hope the week has started well for you guys.. I am struggling a bit with organization (procrastination sucks). I need to do some spring cleaning, get rid of old clothes, put away winter clothes, clean my car because it’s starting to smell like fast food….yeah..i told you way too much haha
Talking of fast food, I must confess I fell out of the “work-out wagon” and cannot for the life of me find time to jump back in..truth be told..I have been watching way too much t.v for my own good, even though I just finished a book (Eleanor and Park). It’s somewhat of a teenage romance book, but I still shed a tear somewhere along the paragraphs haha, I won’t spoil it for anyone but I was sniffing quite a bit, any recommendations on any good books, preferably long and not too sappy?

Are you guys working out for the summer? or do you guys work out on a regular basis?, I would love some tips to keep me motivated honestly. For now let me finish all the pies and sweets I got on my birthday, then I’ll start jogging off the “food-baby belly”.

Time

For visual readers (lol…jokes), the above are recent pictures taken with my DSLR….I am enjoying photography in spring because everything is so alive. The ferry is in a small cute historic neighborhood close to where I live and hopefully in future I’ll share more photos, the picture of me standing is me practicing focus points and manual shooting…I get so thrilled when I learn new tricks…if you have been a beginner DSLR learner I know you share this moment lol, the other pictures are random, p.s those trees do blossom in spring and it should be gorgeous

I also feel like I have no time for anything!!!, I have so many ideas but no time for actions..current situation:

yeah, it’s time for me to renew my BLSand I went ahead and signed up for ACLS (I didn’t know I should study for ACLS before class..oops!) thanks to the bf for having an extra copy for ACLS , am now reading it like a novel befor e class tomorrow morning 😁, I hope I pass, I’ve heard of HP’s who’ve failed the class(I didn’t even know that was possible lol) …I better pass because it is freaking expensive. I am also turning a year older in April and I am eying those sandals from Seychelles *hint*

Anyhow, hopefully during the weekend i’ll do some outfit posts…I am so jealous of you guys who post everyday/every other day. Lastly, I might be starting some DIY projects to make things (jewelry, clothing) I like but can’t find my size or my taste, hopefully  that will go well lol. Cheers guys!
